What to see in Spetses

The Spetses Island (Modern Greek: σπέτσες, old: σπέτσαι, Spetsai) is an island of Greece, which is sometimes included as one of the Saronic Gulf islands. Until 1948, it was part of the prefecture of Achovocorinthia, which is now divided into Argolide and Corinthia. In ancient times, it was known as Pyyussa, and later as pets. The city of Spetsses (with a population of 3,846 in 2001) is the only large settlement on the island, and was one of the two provinces in Greece with less than five settlements and two municipalities. The island is currently an autonomous municipality (population 3,916). The other settlements on the island are Moní Agion Panton (population 32), Ligoneri (16), Agioi Anargyroi (11) and Kouzoúnos (3). They are also part of the Municipality of Spetsses the islands of Spetsopoula (population 11) and Velopoula (uninhabited).

Boats arrive regularly from Pireo. The port is also known as Dapia. The trails surround the island of which there is a total of between 25 and 30 km, the beaches are agios breasts, in the city center, Agioi Anargiroi and Agia Paraskevi on the back of the island, Zogeria, and two beaches nearby From the city, College Beach and Agia Marina, are used for the practice of aquatic sports. The island is also remarkable for being the home of the Greek architect George Diamantopoulos who was killed by the communists at the end of 1930. He is considered a national hero on the island.

The island of Spets is twinned with a municipality in the province of Jaén, Bailén, and there have been numerous visits between both municipalities. The movie "The Lost Daughter" (2020, Dir. Maggie Gyllenhaal) filmed on the island. It is based on a novel by Elena Ferrante.
